Summer/Autumn Maths Learning Opportunities
Our friends at White Rose Maths have produced some excellent activity booklets for the primary age range, which we thought you may find useful over the Summer and into the Autumn. We use White Rose for most of our teaching and learning in school, so the children will be familiar with the ideas and will enjoy the challenge. Please click on the picture below to take you to the White Rose website, where you will find booklets for your child's year group:
Whole School Curriculum Tasks
During the period of school closure we have decided to have weekly curriculum tasks which the whole school can take part in. These will replace topic based activities.
We felt that this was both fun and engaging and will hopefully support you as parents and your children in their continuous learning provision without placing extra pressure to teach new content at home. You will find the resources for each week for your child's relevant class and age group below .

BBC Bitesize Daily
The BBC are launching a comprehensive daily programme of live lessons and activities for all year groups, beginning on Monday 20th April. You can find the page for these daily lessons and resources here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/dailylessons
Class teachers may direct you to these as part of the daily continuous learning and you may choose to take advantage of these lessons to support your child's learning.

Week Beginning 13.7.20 & 20.7.20 - All About Me
Over the next couple of weeks we would like you to create your own coat of arms. The sheet below can be divided into four sections or quarters and in each section we would like you to draw or write about some of the things that you enjoy and provide some information about you. Thee can be hobbies, things you like about school and things that you are good at. You can then bring your Coat of Arms with you in September to share with your new class teacher, so please make them colourful, interesting and full of information about you! If you do not have a printer at home, there will be some blank copies available for you to collect when you visit this week to spend time with your teacher.

Week Beginning 29.6.20 & 6.7.20 - #WestwoodRocks and Wellbeing
#WestwoodRocks
Your challenge for the next two weeks is to take part in the #WestwoodRocks challenge. We would like you to decorate a rock/pebble and on the bottom to write words #WestwoodRocks and your name so that when people find them they know who placed it there.
Once you have created your #WestwoodRock, please send a photo of it into school and then hide it somewhere in a public space where it could be found. As you find people's #WestwoodRocks, please use the form on the #WestwoodRocks Gallery let us know who you are and whose rock you found. You can also say what you liked about the rock, but PLEASE don't say where it was that you found it!
You can keep going back to record your finds as you discover more rocks!

Musical Instruments
This week we would like you to try and explore making your own music!
To do this we would like you to try and make your own musical instrument using whatever you have around the house. It might be a box with a lid that has some rice or pasta inside to make a nice sound, or a covered tube with something inside. You might also use something to tap, scrape or even bang!
Once you have made an instrument, try to record the music you have made, either as a video or as a sound file and email it to your teacher, along with a proud photo of you and your instrument for our media gallery. Have fun!

Week Beginning 15.6.20 - Sock Puppets and Wellbeing
Sock Puppets
This week we would like you to make something new out of something old. We are sure that in most of your houses there will be a selection of odd socks – those socks that go in the washing machine as a pair but come out on their own! So, your task this week is to make something out of a sock. Mrs Rosier has recently made “no-sew” sock bunnies with her children which inspired this activity. There are lots of tutorials online if you need a bit of help, ranging from simple projects requiring no sewing, to projects that require a bit more effort. Will you make bunny, a monkey, a monster or something different all together? We cannot wait to see your creations in our gallery. Happy making! |
Wellbeing
Our well-being is important and we need to look after and understand how and why we feel and think what we do. Have a look at the well-being challenge sheet and choose something different to do. Also, have a look at the daily Coram Scarf PSHE blog for fun ideas which are suitable for all ages. https://www.coramlifeeducation.org.uk/harolds-daily-diary ![]()

Week Beginning 8.6.20 - Self Portrait Week
This week we would like you to draw, paint or even use pencil to draw a self portrait of yourself. You can draw your self portrait simply as you see it, or you may decide to draw it in the style of Picasso. There are some ideas and inspiration below to make this a fun challenge, if you do! Also, you will see some helpful information on how to draw a self portrait, so good luck, be as artistic as you can and have lots of fun! We would LOVE to see your self portraits so that we can add them to the gallery.

Week Beginning 18.5.20 - Team Westwood Sports Challenge
Had we been in school this week we would have been busy readying ourselves for skipping day, the swimming gala and sports day. However, being ‘Team Westwood’, we are not going to let a little thing like home schooling get in our way are we? Therefore, although we can’t really replicate the swimming gala, we can certainly do our best with the other sporting activities so for our whole school curriculum activity this week we are asking you to join in with all, or at least some, of our ‘Westwood Sports Week Challenges’. Good luck and don’t forget to let us know how you get on by sending us photos and adding your scores and times to the sports board for a little bit of friendly competition!
Please click on the image of activities alongside to see what you can look forward to! |
Week Beginning 11.5.20 - Westwood Time Capsules
This week we would like you to use your geography mapping skills to create and hide a time capsule. We would like you to find a container that you can decorate and fill with things that give a snapshot of what your life is like. You could include your favourite things, a news article printed from a website or an old toy you used to enjoy. It is up to you! You could include a written letter to yourself to explain to your future self what your current hobbies and wishes are, or even a self portrait of yourself.
Having created your capsule, we would like you to either bury it in your garden or find a suitable hiding place in your house. Then we would like you to create a detailed map to show where your capsule is hidden. Try to remember to all the details you can so it makes it easy to locate your capsule in the future. Remember to include a north arrow, a key (explaining what your symbols means) and try to draw things all in the same scale.
It is up to you how long you wait until you open up your time capsule. You could open it at the end of your time at Westwood School, or later on in life. But the key is to make sure your map is clear enough so you can locate your capsule when you choose to in the future. Please send in your photos to your class teacher of what you have included in your capsule or where you have buried it, or if you would rather keep both those a secret, a photo of you with your container. We look forward to seeing your time capsules. Have fun!

Week Beginning 27.4.20 - The Great Westwood Bake Off!
This week we would like you to use more of your design technology and cooking skills and take part in our virtual Bake Off. Using whatever ingredients you have to hand, please bake something delicious and then take a photograph of your show stopping masterpiece to send to your teacher for inclusion in our gallery. We can then all enjoy looking at each other's wonderful bakes. This doesn't need to be anything technical - even decorating biscuits is fine! We just thought it would be a fun and interesting activity for us all to get involved in.
Please let us know the name of your bake, too, so that we can put it under your photo.
Once you have created your bake, please then head to your class blog and write up the instructions for making your mouth-watering masterpiece so that we can all then have a go! Let's see how many we can get into the gallery by Friday and you are welcome to make more than one, too! Have fun.

Week Beginning 20.4.20 - Andy Goldsworthy Art
Andy Goldsworthy is a famous artist who has worked with natural materials to create images and sculptures. This week we would like you to create your own images using anything you can find outside in your garden and around your house - leaves, sticks, twigs, flowers, bark - the choice is endless! You can create your images on the ground and then take a photograph of them to share with your class teacher. We will then create a Westwood gallery of art at the end of the week! You can create any picture or pattern you like and there are some resources here to help you get started with ideas. Try to create as many artistic images and sculptures as you can throughout the week. Good luck!
