It is my pleasure to welcome you to Willow Class and Westwood with Iford Primary School. Willow Class is a mixed year group class of Reception and Year 1 children and it provides a warm and inviting environment for the youngest members of our school. The children love to play and learn together, look after each other, and are brilliant at following the three school rules - ready, respectful, safe. Below, you will find some general information about Willow Class.

Learning

Reception:

Our Reception children follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum. 

This curriculum is split into 7 areas of learning: Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Communication and Language, Physical Development, Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World and Expressive Arts and Design. 

The children learn through a range of self-initiated play, play-based challenges, small group and whole-class teaching sessions, which include daily sessions of Phonics and Reading, English, and Maths. 

Year 1: 

Our Year 1 children follow the National Curriculum. 

This curriculum is split into core subjects, such as English, Maths and Science, alongside foundation subjects such as music, history, geography etc. 

Phonics and Reading:

The children in Willow Class love wonderful stories. Our love of stories and reading is fostered through daily reading, rhyme and story times. Children learn to become fluent readers through our Phonics programme, Little Wandle, which is taught daily by our trained staff.

General Information

In Term 4, Willow Class will be having PE on Mondays and Fridays. On these days the children should come to school wearing their PE kit. 

All children should have a pair of wellies in school for outdoor play and learning.

Book bags should be brought to school every day. In their book bags, the children should have their HASP books and their school reading books and reading records.

HASP (Home and School Partnership) books are checked every morning for any messages you need to communicate to your child's teacher. Staff will also use the HASP book to write messages to you as parents. Please check them daily after school.

Reading books are changed when they have been read in full three times. Please make a note in your child's reading record after every read. 

Reception and Year 1 children are provided with a Phonics Information Book. We will put information about the sounds learned so far into these books. Please make sure these books are in your child's book bag every Friday for updating.

Year 1 also have Homework books containing their weekly spellings. Please can you help you child practise these each week, ready for a spelling challenge on Fridays. Please make sure these are also in your child's book bag every Friday for updating.
